An individual earned a substantial sum on the ouster of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was made public, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from non-public details of the event.

Market Movement in Forecasts

Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the close of the month increased in the time leading up to President Donald Trump declared on the weekend that Maduro had been apprehended.

A single trader, which joined the platform recently and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a modest bet of $32.5K.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Probability Spikes Before News Break

Market statistics shows that participants estimated the likelihood of the president's removal at just a low 6.5 percent in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

Yet these probabilities had climbed to 11% by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the morning of January 3rd, suggesting a rapid movement in positions just before the official statement was made.

"This specific wager has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on non-public details," stated an industry expert.

A handful of other platform users also made tens of thousands of dollars from bets on the same outcome.

Legal Questions Intensifies

Politicians are growing concerned.

Proposed legislation put forward on recently would prevent public officials from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.

Market Background

Event-driven betting sites have grown significantly in recent years, with traders able to bet on everything from elections to political events.

The industry were examined under the last presidential term. Yet it has received a warmer welcome during the present political climate.

Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the stock market, but there are more ambiguous rules in the prediction market space.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits insider trading of any form."
