Officers reported they were contacted by a individual who found a car in Hanau smeared with red-colored fluid

Roughly fifty vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's town of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm police.

Vehicles, walls and postal boxes were defaced, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they announced in a statement.

Officers say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a individual observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish fluid.

The liquid had been drawn in the shape of a swastika, they added.

Police then discovered multiple other vandalized cars and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.

These symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.

Law enforcement say preliminary tests show the fluid was probably human blood.

"Currently there is no indication as to its origin; officials are not yet informed of any harm in connection with the occurrence," they stated.

City officials said they were trying "to solve the incident" and have requested to the residents for tips.

An important official commented the attack rendered him speechless and had to be addressed promptly.

"This act strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the far-right attack five years ago," he posted on online, recalling the murder of nine people by a gunman focusing on people of migrant background in five years prior.
