A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's key government projects.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The president reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his government's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in national projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing predictions to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party called for an immediate suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in full accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and running of these strategic undertakings.
