Space Traveler Discloses Mental Health Struggle Following Deluge of Backlash Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also carried celebrity crewmates.
The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, referring to a phone call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the journey.
She portrayed the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and conducted tests during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her studies and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her background – was buried under the avalanche of misogyny.
She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Months following reaching space, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the supporters whose messages of encouragement helped save her. “You all saved me,” she said.
She noted that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had resulted from the mission, including spotlight on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
About the Mission
The self-operating New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that passed the internationally recognized boundary of space.
The group of women also featured accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
