The megacity Rises to Hazardous Smog After Celebrations
Tuesday brought residents of the world's most polluted city encountered exposed to extremely polluted air that fell into the "critical" level.
Record-Breaking Air Quality Measurements
Various sections of Delhi registered an air quality index exceeding 500, which equals a tenfold increase over the recommended limit set by the World Health Organization.
In some locations, readings of PM2.5 and PM10 hit highs of eighteen hundred, amounting to 15 to 20 times higher than safe levels.
Pyrotechnics Ban and Recent Changes
For the past four years, authorities had implemented a total prohibition on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the dangerous haze that engulfs the capital as colder weather approaches.
However earlier this year, the recently formed regional government appealed to the judicial authority to propose a relaxation of the ban.
The suggestion was allowing "green crackers" – historically criticized by environmental experts as being only approximately one-third less polluting – as a balance between "cultural practices and environment".
Legal Verdict and Enforcement
To the disappointment of environmental and health campaigners, judicial authorities approved the request, specifying that environmentally conscious fireworks could be ignited during designated time windows throughout the celebrations.
Throughout the festival evening, there was extensive violation of the designated hours across the city, with insufficient monitoring regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the more environmentally friendly type.
Many air quality sensors throughout the city registered contamination peaking around the night hours to the most severe levels observed during celebrations in at least the past three years.
International Consequences
Extensive ignition of fireworks during the festival also sparked a dispute with adjacent the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab province partly blaming declining pollution levels in their urban centers on hazardous particles coming from India following the celebrations.
Long-Standing Pollution Crisis
Alarmingly severe readings of atmospheric toxins in the city have continued as a significant issue for over a decade and a half, with the problem continuing to worsen.
Near Diwali, the concentration of dangerous airborne contaminants in the air has been observed to increase dramatically to significantly exceeding the peak levels ever measured in China's capital, which was once considered as the planet's dirtiest city.
Various Pollution Contributors
The situation in the city is resulting from a combination of different contributors including automobile exhaust, construction debris, development work, waste incineration and smoke from farm burning in neighbouring regions of farming communities.
Throughout these areas, rural residents regularly ignite agricultural waste to expedite field preparation, generating hazardous pollution that remains stagnant over the city as winter air descends.
Public Health and Economic Toll
The economic and health toll on the nearly 33 million people residing in the Delhi area is significant, according to various research.
This pollution results in high levels of neurological, heart and circulatory and breathing conditions, and can result in oncological diseases.
The pollution is estimated to be accounting for 10,000 early mortalities each year in Delhi.
