One two-month voyage around the Land Down Under is being halted in the wake of the fatal incident of an elderly woman who was abandoned by the cruise liner on a remote island.

The elderly woman had been walking on the remote island with other travelers from the Coral Adventurer, but broke off from the party for a break. The vessel departed without her and returned several hours later after the crew discovered the passenger was unaccounted for.

An extensive search operation found her body the following day.

Officials are looking into the incident, alongside investigators and the medical examiner.

Chief Executive of the voyage organizer announced that travelers and personnel on the ship were informed that the continuation of the voyage had been cancelled due to the "tragic passing and earlier mechanical issues".

In a statement, he mentioned that passengers would be given a complete reimbursement, and said the company was working "to organize the return journeys of the individuals via specially arranged planes".

Authorities also issued an updated statement, and said they had "provided a directive to the Commander" preventing any new passengers from entering the liner.

The official said that they would inspect the ship in the port city upon its arrival.

Chronology of Incidents

The ship first departed the coastal city on the 24th of October, and was only 48 hours into the journey at the point of the senior passenger's demise. Lizard Island was the first stop on the voyage.

Guests on board - who typically pay substantial amounts of dollars to participate in the expedition - were taken there for a shore visit with the option of trekking or underwater exploration.

Family Response

The child of the victim said that her loved ones was "stunned and saddened that the ship left Lizard Island after an organised excursion without my mother".

In her statement, she portrayed her parent as an "active elderly person" who was a participant of a bushwalking organization.

"Based on limited details we have been provided, it seems that there was a lapse of care and basic judgment," she stated.

She further stated that she wished the examination would be able to identify what "the company should have done that might have saved Mum's existence".

"We understand from the investigators that it was a extremely warm day, and mother became unwell on the uphill trek," she revealed.

"She was asked her to go back, unescorted. Then the vessel sailed away, reportedly without doing a headcount.

"At a certain moment in that process, or soon after, she died, alone."

Operator Position

Through an announcement, the Chief Executive verified that the organization was "working closely with investigators to support their inquiry".

He said that the company was "very regretful that this has transpired" and had extended its total backing to the loved ones.

Shipping Sector Standards

The vessel serves up to one hundred twenty passengers with forty-six staff, according to official data. It was purpose-built to reach distant areas of Australia's coast and is outfitted with "tenders" - minor craft used to transport travelers on day excursions.

Incidents like this are infrequent, and liners have protocols to document which passengers are getting on or getting off, according to industry experts.

"Leaving covertly or [back] on the ship simply isn't an choice," an authority commented.

Cruise lines take these processes very seriously and have "clever tech in place to prevent such events from occurring," the specialist added.
